Internships

Interns are qualified vets seeking to train as Specialists or to further improve their skills and knowledge. Interns must first undertake a one-year rotating internship, prior a Residency training programme.

Currently at Northwest Veterinary Specialists we have six interns that rotate through the different departments of the hospital. The internship duration is 12 months and there are 2 intakes with 3 interns starting on the 1st February and 3 starting on the 1st August of each year.

During the internship, interns work alongside Residents and Specialists in all departments, caring for inpatients and receiving out of hours emergencies. They do not have primary case responsibility but are an integral part of the hospital and case management.

The aim of our internship programme is to provide the interns with knowledge to further their training (PhD, residency, research work) and become better small animal veterinarians.

Our interns receive advanced training over a 12-month period in anaesthesia, diagnostic imaging, internal medicine, neurology/neurosurgery, oncology, ophthalmology, cardiology, orthopaedics and soft tissue surgery, each supervised by recognised specialists in each field.

Our interns also participate in an in-house CPD programme, attending talks given by Specialists and reviewing publications. They also prepare and present talks/seminars and can be involved in research projects and publications.

We welcome both UK and overseas veterinary graduates to join the program and our interns will have the opportunity. Veterinarians with and without general practice experience are welcome to apply. Applicants must hold a veterinary degree and be registered as members of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.

Applicants must be eligible to work in the UK. Veterinarians whose first language is not English, an IELTS certificate (or equivalent) with an average score of 7.5 (no < than 7 in any area) is advised. But candidates that have good communication skills demonstrated during the interview process will also be considered.
